Summer Aerial Camps for Kids Ages 5 – 17

Kaya Aerial Yoga’s Kids Camp is a fun, energetic, secure and safe environment for children to explore aerial arts and yoga. It’s also a place for them to develop a uniquely creative outlet for a child’s natural inclination to grow and play at the same time.

Kaya Kids CampKaya is a strictly non-competitive studio, and our methodology for teaching aerial skills and techniques to children utilises every child’s innate desire to move, climb, spin and flip. We help kids to develop a love of movement and exercise, and to use their natural curiosity and energy to begin building the discipline and focus required to advance in aerial and other movement arts.

All children will start with an introduction to the hammock, which is our most accessible apparatus, and will learn all the foundational wraps, mounts, poses, transitions, and tricks. Depending on the age group, we then expand this foundation into more complex sequencing.

We also teach kids, by using the power of their own self-expression, how to tell stories through the unique movement allowed by the aerial hammock. For children ages 9 and up, we introduce them to the various other apparatus’ used in the aerial arts. With teens in particular, we focus on all aspects of aerial performance. This particular focus is interspersed with physical classes, and our instruction on aerial theory and anatomy through the use of hands-on arts-and-crafts projects.

About Our Instructors

All of our instructors are highly qualified, certified in yoga, aerial yoga, and aerial arts instruction, and have extensive experience working with children of all ages.

Not only are our camp instructors and support staff certified in both traditional floor yoga and aerial yoga, but many also have certifications in dance therapy, as well as childhood development and counseling. A number of our instructors are certified to work with patients recovering from traumatic brain injuries. Some have experience working with children who have developmental delays and neurological issues such as autism.

During camp, two instructors will be present with the children at all times. At a minimum, one of those instructors will be CPR trained.

Take Off: Aerial Arts & Yoga for Kids Ages 5-8

Kaya Kids CampKaya’s Adventures In Flight Camp for children ages 5 to 8 is a one-week camp that runs Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday’s class, which runs from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., features a brief show during which the children will perform an aerial sequence they learned throughout the week.
The kids will also have an opportunity to introduce their favorite tricks and poses to their parents during this time. The performance begins at 5:30 p.m., and parents are welcome to begin arriving at 5:00 p.m., just as class is ending.

Our Kids Aerial Camp was specially developed to introduce children to aerial arts and yoga while also helping them to build strength, increase flexibility, improve their levels of confidence, and to provide them with a fun, supportive, and uniquely creative physical outlet. A related craft will be a part of the week’s activities.

Throughout the week, children will be introduced to the breathing techniques, physical movements, and fundamental principles of aerial yoga.

For children ages 5-8 who participate in Kaya’s Adventures In Flight Camp, a strong emphasis will be placed on creative movement and body awareness. By emphasizing the kids’ innate love of movement, we work with their natural inclination to climb, swing, and flip about. We direct those motions into building a proper aerial yoga technique while also increasing focus and discipline, and a love for movement and exercise. Students will also be taught how to build a healthy foundation for expressing their experiences and emotions. Ample time for play and experimentation, of course, is scheduled into each class.

All camp classes are led by a senior teacher and assisted by a senior teacher. Both instructors are trained not only in aerial yoga, but also in yoga for children.

Peak Performance: Aerial Circus Performance Prep Program for Kids & Teens Ages 5-17

Peak Performance is an all-ages, performance-based aerial kids camp. The emphasis of classes and workshops each day is on the development of aerial technique, understanding the foundational mechanics of multiple aerial apparatus’, and then utilizing those techniques and the gained knowledge as a powerful, creative tool of self-expression.

Kaya Kids CampBeyond just learning tricks and aerial skills, however, students will have an opportunity to explore movement and their bodies to tell stories and to convey emotion. Specifically, we’ll help students work through something known as “the aerial performer’s toolbox.”

By working with the implements in their toolbox, students will learn and work hands-on to create all aspects of a performance, from developing character and creating a narrative to more technical aspects such as choreography, lighting, and music selection. Other behind-the-scenes work will include rigging preparation, apparatus changes, and even costuming, hair, and makeup.

Throughout this camp your children will create, from start to finish, a solo, duo or trio piece on the apparatus of their choice. They will also participate in a choreographed ensemble number with the group.

This camp week will be held as part of our performance prep program, and kids will have the opportunity to work closely with other student performers, professional aerialists, aerial instructors, and stage crew members.

Camp will conclude with children performing their solo (or duo or trio) performance and their group’s ensemble piece. These performances will take place during our Friday evening showcase on July 13.

Please note that we do recommend that students who enroll in this camp have some experience either in aerial, dance, gymnastics or yoga. This is not a strict requirement though, and in fact the first day of camp will be dedicated to teaching and reviewing beginner techniques on multiple apparatus’.

Yet while all children are encouraged and welcome to enroll, parents should be aware that this is our most physically intensive camp. Because of that, children who have an interest in dance or aerial will certainly do much better—and will enjoy themselves much more—than those who don’t. Indeed, this particular camp will be very difficult and unenjoyable for kids who lack an interest in movement and the performing arts.

If your child does not have any sort of physical background or a background in the performing arts, we recommend they start by attending one of our earlier camp weeks for their age group, or at least by attending a private or semi-private session, or one of our regularly scheduled group classes.

Nevertheless, Kaya is neither a competitive nor an elitist studio, and children of all abilities and skill levels will be assisted and supported—and expected to perform—regardless of whether they are beginning students or more advanced practitioners.
